*Ebike Range: Explained

An ebike's battery life is influenced by several factors that can affect its maximum range. While our ebikes can achieve up to 60 miles of range under ideal riding conditions, range can vary from 20 - 60 miles based on many contributing factors.

Here's a list of the most common factors that affect range, as well as what you can do to maximize your riding time.

  • Pedal Assist: Higher levels of pedal assist will allow for an easier ride, but will also draw more power from the battery. Lower pedal assist levels are better for getting as many miles as possible out of your battery.

  • Average Cruising Speed: Riding slower will decrease the amount of energy you lose to wind resistance as the bike pushes you forward. Slower speeds will extend battery life.

  • Tire Pressure: Keeping your tires inflated to the recommended pressure can help increase your range. Maintaining a proper tire pressure not only increases your range, but also helps prevent pinch flats! For most riding situations, checking your tire pressure at least once a week will keep your ride safe and energy-efficient.

  • Load Weight: Carrying a heavier load can decrease your range. This includes the total load of both the weight of the rider and any cargo you may be carrying. More weight takes more time and energy to get up to speed, negatively affecting your range. It's best to keep loads light whenever possible if you're looking to extend your range.

  • Terrain & Elevation: In general, riding over smooth and flat terrain will give you a longer range. Hills and rough terrain can greatly impact your maximum range, especially on higher assist levels.

  • Wind: That's right! The wind can affect your battery range too! Riding into a headwind will decrease your range, but if you're able to catch a tailwind, you'll actually see that you'll gain more range! Be mindful of which way the wind is blowing when you are riding. If you've been riding in a tailwind, turning around will take more energy from the battery to get you home.

  • Ambient Temperature: Riding in cold weather will impact the battery's ability to function optimally. A good rule of thumb is, if you're comfortable, then the battery is comfortable too. This also goes for storing the battery too!

eBikesorg Review

Our very own @photony was one of the first to get his hands on a pre-launch model of AIMA's latest e-bike, the Santa Monica. This bike continues with the California theme (following AIMA's previous Big Sur model), but it has something extremely unique: a Route 66 Bafang motor designed exclusively for the Santa Monica.

Micromobility Industries Review

A quick "preview" review. The Santa Monica is a sleek and refined city bike with stealthily integrated electronics and an approachable step-thru frame. Assist is provided by AIMA's new "Route 66" 750-watt slim profile motor, custom designed in a partnership with Bafang that includes the full drive system.

Best all around ebike for the money

I did a ton of research on a bunch of different brands and eventually settled on the Santa Monica for my wife and myself. Couldn't be happier! We always charge our batteries out of the bike so the safety auto shut off has not been an issue. I especially like that they only sell their stuff through brick and motar stores to support the little guys and help keep bike shops in business. Our Local bike shop was a lot of help too.

First e-bike and loving it

My husband talked me into an e-bike and I’m so glad he did. We’re fortunate to live in an area with lots of bike paths, so we plan to go out and about on our bikes a lot. The e-bike takes out the hill dread and makes riding run. And looks super cool too! Would love to see some matching accessories available.

First eBike for this Senior

I had been researching eBikes for 1.5 years and had finally settled on a highly recommended, sub-$2k, ebike. I went to a local dealer to buy the bike and the dealer asked me to take his Santa Monica prototype, a bike I had never seen before, for a ride. Compared to the bike I went there to buy, the SM had 50% more power, a higher wH battery, larger brakes, a better display and a lower step-over height, a critical requirement as I have a disability that restricts my leg motion. Plus it was less expensive. I put in an order for the Santa Monica that day. I picked up my new Santa Monica several months ago and have been enjoying it ever since. I ride it in PAL 1 most of the time; it cruises up our steepest local hills in PAL 2 (out of 5) at 15 MPH with me pedaling. This bike is fast! One review showed a pedal assisted speed of 37 MPH in Unlimited mode. The acceleration in PAL 2 puts a smile on my face; PAL 5 lets me effortlessly accelerate up the steepest hill in my riding area, a buddy's long driveway with a grade illegal for public roads. I am getting over 60 miles on a charge (mostly flat roads, PAL 1, pedaling full time to maximize my exercise). This is very well built, beautiful (mine is blue) with welds and paint that are easily the equivalent of bikes double the cost. It is a solid feeling bike; even large bumps hit at 15 - 20 MPH don't cause frame flexing. It is a fun bike that looks like a low speed cruiser but can turn into a rocket (Unlimited PAL 5) if you want. If you are looking for a great sub-$2K cruiser that you can look forward to riding every day, , this bike is worth a look.

BATTERY ISSUE UPDATE

After speaking with two AIMA reps, I was told there is a firmware update available to fix the battery "sleep mode" issue after charging. They were eager to solve any issues. Hoping this works as I love the bike.

love the bike, not the battery charging issue

The bike is great. I swapped the tan seat and grips for black like the Big Sur. But, like another reviewer mentioned, if you charge it and leave it plugged in after fully charging, you have to remove the battery and push a button to wake it up. I only left mine for about 15 minutes after fully charging and had to wrestle the battery out, reset it and reinstall it. Not happy with that. Customer service said they're aware but there is no fix as of now.
Not sure I want to deal with that for the life of the bike. The plug/unplug "fix" didn't work for me.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.

The 'sleep mode' feature you're referring to is actually an added layer of protection designed to prevent overcharging or overheating of the battery in the Santa Monica e-bike. This feature helps to reduce potential fire hazards by automatically shutting off the battery when it has been charging for an excessive amount of time after being fully charged.

If the battery enters 'sleep mode,' simply disconnect the charger and wait for approximately 4 minutes. After this, you should be able to power the bike on. Alternatively, you can remove the battery and press and hold the power button on the battery for a few seconds to wake it up immediately.

We understand that this feature may have caused frustration for some of our customers, so we have released a firmware update that removes this function. If you would like to have this function removed, please kindly reach out to your dealer shop for more information.

Please note that all our bike models, including the Santa Monica, are UL2849 certified, the highest safety standard for electric bicycles. For more information, please visit the official website.
